DHI, the new hair transplant method
One of the most recent discoveries in the field of hair implantation is the DHI hair transplantation method. This innovative technique, which stands for "Direct Hair Implantation", allows hair to be transplanted with particular gentleness, for a natural and harmonious result.
During a hair transplant, the surgeon removes hair follicles from an area with a high density of hair, usually the back of the head, and grafts them onto the balding areas. Before starting the procedure, the surgeon sterilizes and anesthetizes the donor area, that is to say the area where the hair follicles will be removed. The surgeon then performs one of two methods of hair transplantation: follicular unit transplantation (FUT) or follicular unit extraction (FUE).
FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)
FUT is the most well-known and common traditional method of hair transplantation. With the FUT method, a strip of tissue is taken from the back of the head (this is called the "donor" site) and taken to a special room to be washed and separated into grafts (a piece of tissue containing hair follicles to plant). The dissected and sorted grafts are then transplanted into holes created in the bald part of the head, called the "recipient" site.
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)
FUE is a more modern technique, the donor area is shaved, then the segments of hair are cut individually by making circular incisions around these segments. The doctor has to extract each graft individually and directly from the scalp, so the FUE procedure takes more time. The extracted grafts are then inserted into holes created in the recipient area, similar to FUT.
hair transplant DHI method
The DHI method, a variant of the FUE method
The DHI technique, which required many years of research and development, has now been used and known worldwide since 2016. The DHI method is a variant of the FUE technique. After the removal of the follicles from the donor area by micro-motor or manual method, they are grafted onto the chosen area using the DHI method. The most important difference between the other techniques is the device used during the operations, called "Choi Implanter" or "Choi Pen".
Another important difference is that the grafts once recovered are transplanted immediately and without incision unlike the FUE method, where the grafts are preserved. The DHI technique is performed under local anesthesia
The different stages of the DHI implantation procedure:
The doctor locally anesthetizes the donor and recipient area for a totally painless treatment.
Then comes the step of extracting the hair follicles , the doctor extracts the follicles precisely at the back of the skull using a special tool with a diameter of 0.7mm. The important thing in this step is precision and gentleness.
The third step is to classify the hair follicles, the time of classification the hair is kept in a solution called 'HypoThermosol' which preserves the quality of the follicles as much as possible.
The implantation stage arrives , the doctor manually injects the hair follicles directly onto the scalp using the injector pen. The precision of the instrument makes it possible to directly transplant the follicle without having to create holes or slits for the incision. The graft is simply inserted into the needle of the pen to inject it into the scalp, the choi pen allows the needle to be withdrawn at the same time as the follicle is deposited in the scalp. This gesture is repeated as many times as necessary, it is a team effort, the doctor is helped by a nurse in the preparation of the pen.
Here is a summary of the advantages of the DHI implantation method
The area to retrieve the grafts does not need to be shaved (unlike the FUE method which requires a shaved head)
The use of the Choi pen allows great precision in terms of depth and direction during hair implantation.
There is no bleeding or crusting, the scar is minimal.
The recovery time is shorter than for conventional procedures.
The hair follicles are directly transplanted into the recipient area which eliminates a step (the step of preserving and sorting the hair follicles with the FUE/FUT methods)
Hair density is higher with the DHI method, so the result is more natural in some patients.
How to prepare for the intervention?
To be able to experience the hair transplant procedure peacefully and have good results, it is important to follow a few instructions and prepare well for the D-Day. Fifteen days before the procedure, reduce alcohol and tobacco, and stop taking minoxidil if you take it as well as any medicine that can affect the blood (food supplements, aspirin or other blood thinners).
On the day of the procedure, avoid exciting drinks such as tea or coffee, which could cause you stress. Prepare in your suitcase comfortable clothes that do not slip over the head to avoid touching the very recent transplant (a shirt for example).
