How is FUE hair transplant performed?
FUE is a graft extraction method. For FUE hair transplantation, hair on the back of the head or other parts of the body can be used. More detailed information about hair transplantation from the beard or hair from other parts of the body is described in the relevant articles.
Let's analyze the hair transplant from the back of the head. The patient should be positioned face down or in a sitting position. The face down position helps to easily collect grafts from the occipital region. After they are removed from the sides, the patient is placed in a lateral decubiture position (in other words, an inclined position). In this position, graft extraction is much easier. Extraction of grafts when the patient is lying down is faster, but causes more bleeding. Meanwhile, the sitting position contributes to less bleeding during hair transplantation.
First of all, the graft transplant area should be marked with a regular pen. This pre-planned approach helps to divide the site evenly. The divided areas are inflated with saline, which is also called isotonic saline. The swelling of the skin makes it easier to remove the hair and prevents it from being damaged. After the introduction of local anesthesia, you can begin to extract the hair grafts.
Loupes should be used during graft extraction. A 2.5x - 4x magnifying glass is enough. If loupes are not used, the grafts can be severely damaged. Fine perforators cut the hair roots without the need for suturing, and the grafts are removed one by one. These extracted hair follicles are placed individually in glass containers called Petri dishes and stored in cooling containers until transplanted. The follicles must be stored until implantation in a cold temperature of 0.4 degrees Celsius.
Donor area for the FUE method
For FUE hair transplantation, it is necessary to shave off the hair. In a conventional FUE operation, the length of the hair on the donor area should be 1 mm; this is called zero shave. Usually, about 5000-7000 grafts are removed from the shaved area, depending on the need and capabilities of the donor area.
