Baldness is a pathology of the scalp inducing hair loss that is often badly experienced. It most commonly affects men, but women can also suffer from it. Hair transplantation is today the most effective and definitive solution to find denser hair, in a very natural way.
Doctor Belhassen and his cosmetic surgery team practice FUE , a non-invasive hair transplant method that leaves no scars.
Baldness: what is it?
Androgenetic alopecia is the scientific name for baldness. It is a disease of a pathology of the scalp at the same time of genetic and hormonal order of which nearly 10 million men are reached in France. Cases of early baldness are not uncommon and one can suffer from male pattern baldness from the age of 20 and become completely bald before the age of 30.
It also affects women, to a lesser extent and women with this pathology are generally over 50 years old; it appears in fact rather during and after the menopause.
Why am I bald?
The cause of male pattern baldness is due to the action of testosterone, a male hormone produced by the testicles and hair follicles. Under the effect of an enzyme, it is transformed into DHT, or dihydrotestosterone. In individuals who are sensitive and predisposed to it from a genetic point of view, this derivative of testosterone will begin to attack the hair follicle. The result is a runaway hair cycle , leaving no more time for the hair to grow properly, followed by a miniaturization and a refinement of the hair shafts and finally an exhaustion of the follicles. The hair follicles, normally capable of carrying out 25 to 30 hair cycles during our lifetime, lasting 2 to 7 years depending on the individual, then no longer produce hair.
There are different stages of baldness , represented on the Norwood-Hamilton scale , ranging from 1 to 7, with 7 being the complete disappearance of the hair except for the Hippocratic crown. It is in this area located on the sides and the back of the head that we will draw the healthy hair follicles to replant them in the sparse areas as part of a hair transplant .
Hair implants are today the only permanent and non-invasive solution that allows you to find denser, perfectly natural hair.
female pattern baldness
In women, baldness presents and evolves differently. In genetically predisposed women, on the other hand, it occurs more often during or after menopause, when the female hormones can no longer counter the effect of DHT. The loss is located at the level of the top of the skull, at the level of the hairline. The stages of baldness in women are 3 in number on the Ludwig scale .
A woman can have hair implants; nevertheless, female androgenetic alopecia sometimes affects the entire hair, diffusely, including the sides and back of the head, otherwise the donor area is also affected by hair loss. In this case, a hair transplant is therefore contraindicated.
Also, blood and hormone tests are often needed to identify the cause of female hair loss – which can occur due to a deficiency, hormonal imbalance, taking medications, etc. – and thus provide the appropriate treatments.
The principle of hair transplantation
Hair transplantation has evolved a lot. In the past, hair surgery was routinely performed with a scar on the back of the head (FUT hair transplant). From now on, hair transplantation is a non-invasive treatment that leaves no unsightly marks, neither on the back of the head nor on the implantation area: FUE hair transplantation. Each follicle being removed manually one by one, then re-implanted in the same way.
In concrete terms, it is a hair auto-transplantation technique that makes it possible to remove and re-implant the follicular units (hair follicle) in order to redeploy the volume of the hair on the bald areas, while guaranteeing a result that is times natural.
The field of hair transplantation has evolved enormously, in particular thanks to the appearance of micro-grafts reducing the importance of residual scars and making it possible to obtain a reliable, definitive and natural result.
As such, two types of hair transplant techniques currently exist:
FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) hair transplant or strip technique
FUE ( Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplant , which is a more modern technique, non-invasive and leaves no marks or scars on the back of the head. Doctor Belhassen practices this method.
Hair transplant, what does it consist of?
Hair transplantation is an aesthetic intervention that can remedy baldness problems using the patient's own hair. In this, it allows to find a denser hair with an entirely natural aspect.
A hair transplant can also be used to fill in sparse eyebrows or a beard as part of a beard transplant or an eyebrow transplant .
Hair transplant: before the procedure
During the preoperative phase, a clinical and blood assessment is carried out in accordance with the prescriptions. It may be necessary to look for the cause of the hair loss thanks to an in-depth blood test (assay of sex hormones, thyroid, ferritin)
It is recommended to take vitamin C in order to strengthen the immune system. Because smoking has a negative impact on wound healing, it is recommended that the patient stop smoking one month before surgery. Any medicine containing aspirin should be avoided during the 3 weeks preceding the operation.
Procedure of a hair transplant in Nice
Doctor Belhassen and his team practice FUE hair transplantation, a non-invasive technique that leaves no scars and can be performed in 1 or 2 days depending on the number of grafts needed, on an outpatient basis.
Extraction of hair follicles
After having shaved the donor area or a part to perform a graft discreetly, then after a simple local anesthesia, FUE hair transplantation consists of manually removing the necessary hair follicles one by one from the sides and back of the hair. head (donor area insensitive to the factors responsible for androgenetic alopecia).
Dr. Belhassen uses a small electric tool called a micro-punch with a diameter between 0.8mm and 1mm in diameter to make himself.
The hair follicles, which can contain 1 to several hairs, are then sorted by the number of hairs they contain, in order to be reimplanted on the bald areas according to a precise hair design to recreate the most natural hair possible.
Implantation of hair follicles
The bald area is most of the time previously shaved in order to allow precise reimplantation. Nevertheless, if it is only necessary to redensify a hairline or if the patient does not wish to be shaved, in particular if it is a woman, a transplant can be performed on long hair .
Several small skin incisions 1 millimeter wide are made using a very fine scalpel. Then, the implantation consists in placing with precision and meticulousness the follicles (single or multiple) one by one in each small slit, respecting the natural movement of the hair.
Single follicles (1 single hair) are placed first at the hairline, then as you move forward in the scalp, multiple follicles are implanted to create density.
The duration of the operation varies depending on the size of the area to be covered and the number of grafts required. Expert in the field of hair transplantation, Doctor Belhassen and his team can perform a hair transplant in a single day with the implantation of 7000 to 9000 hairs (approx. 3000 grafts). If the bald area requires more grafts, the operation will take place over two days, always on an outpatient basis.
At the end of the session, a bandage is placed on the sampling area to protect it. The implanted area is left in the open air.
The aftermath of an FUE hair transplant in Nice
The FUE hair transplant as it is practiced by Doctor Belhassen is a painless intervention, with very simple consequences.
The next day, the dressing can be removed, gently, and the area rinsed with warm, clear water. Edema can occur after 2 to 3 days of the operation and naturally resolves after 4 days, especially if the forehead line or the front area of the head has been worked a lot. Whole head shampoos are usually allowed after 2-3 days.
Motorcycle or scooter helmets should be avoided for 3 weeks. Wearing a headgear may be possible provided it does not compress the head. In any case, it is strongly recommended to leave the implanted area exposed to the open air as much as possible.
As the areas will gradually heal, a feeling of tightness, some itching may appear. In the two to three weeks postoperatively, small crusts will reform at the level of the implantation zone and will disappear. It is recommended to massage with aloe vera gel to facilitate the disappearance of its crusts and during shampoos.
Part of the hair contained in the hair follicles at the time of implantation will also fall out: this is a perfectly normal phenomenon. Then, your hair follicles will produce new hair, which will grow gradually from the third month. Regrowth is best seen from around the fifth or sixth month.
A work stoppage is not compulsory, but may prove necessary depending on your professional occupation.
Physical activities such as sport can be resumed after 2 or 3 weeks.
The result of a FUE hair transplant
We observe the first regrowth from 3 months, but this regrowth is more visible after 4 to 5 months. The new hair will grow and thicken over time.
The result of the hair transplant is considered final between 12 and 18 months, the time it takes for the new hair to fully blossom. Your new hair will behave like healthy, perfectly normal hair.
Doctor Belhassen's post-transplant protocol
To optimize the result of a hair transplant, we recommend a post-treatment protocol that consists of injections of PRP (Platelet Enriched Plasma) and hair mesotherapy with biotin.
The sessions take place every 15 days from the first postoperative month, for 2 to 3 months, alternating PRP and hair mesotherapy. Other additional sessions are possible if necessary in order to provide a tailor-made solution , and to maintain your hair on a regular basis.
A completely personalized follow-up is essential after a hair transplant: 10 days after the intervention, then at one month, two months and three months, or even more if necessary.
Doctor Belhassen and his team are at your entire disposal to answer your questions throughout the regrowth process.
